dc.description.abstractThe growing of solid wastes generation is becoming even more a global concern. The organic solid wastes compose a large portion of municipal solid wastes generated in Brazil. Thus, it has been seeking adequate environmental alternatives to use the potential of these wastes as organic substrates and fertilizers. Composting has been shown an effective alternative for the treatment of these wastes, environmentally and economically. At the end of its process, there is a product with great value of organic matter and nutrients, which can be used as fertilizer or substrate. The objective of this study was to identify the efficiency of using substrates coming from a composting process to the production of lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa L.) Crespa. It was used a commercial compost in comparison level to six organic compounds, which had the following composition of mixture: cellulosic casings, flotation sludge, urban pruning, hatchery waste, feed, silo waste, wheat straw and coal. PH analyzes were performed, electrical conductivity, macronutrients, phytotoxicity test and production of seedlings in trays. The seedling production stage occurred in the greenhouse for a period of 30 days, where polystyrene 200 cells trays were used as experimental block. At the end of this stage, it was made use of phytometric parameters to evaluate the samples. Through multivariate statistic analysis, it was found that the extent of shoot and stem diameter were the indicator parameters of substrate efficiency in the development of seedlings. The use of compost produced by composting was more efficient for production of lettuce seedlings when compared to the commercial compost. The use as a substrate for production of lettuce seedlings offered the necessary nutrients for the plant as well as solve the problem of organic waste generation, providing a form of treatment that does not imply their improper disposal
