Buckling can be considered a failure due to structural instability. Both design and engineering applications where slender elements are involved, buckling failure must be verified. In this context this research presents a theoretical study using linear and nonlinear static analysis through the finite element method, applied to buckling, with the objective of comparing the two modes of analysis and the critical loads. initially, the concepts of buckling, finite element method, linear and non-linear analysis and the variables required for the study are discussed. the methodology used to perform linear static analyzes was done using the eigenvalue and eigenvector method and, for non-linear analyzes, the displacement control method was used. the study was applied to two numerical examples using structural metal profiles of commercial geometry, an "I" and an "U" cross section profile. the critical loads for the two geometries were obtained by the two modes of analysis and evaluated the results. As a result, it was observed that non-linear analyses presented more conservative values of critical loads, 2.16% lower for the "U" profile and 4.65% smaller for the "I" profile, in addition to the non-linear analysis a greater amount of information about the evolution of the load can be described.
