Based on the communicative approach for language teaching (LARSEN-FREEMAN, 2000; BROWN, 2007) and theories about image reading and visual literacy (DONDIS, 1997; SANTAELLA, 1993; 2005; HERNÁNDEZ, 2000; 2007), this project presents a study about the use of images and their functions in the textbook named Alter Ego 1 - méthode de français. It analyses if the use of images actually works as an encouragement tool for the acquisition of French as a foreign language, seeking to respond if the authors of Alter Ego textbook take the use of images into consideration as a device which facilitates the acquisition of the French language in the classroom environment. Results obtained confirm that the usage of images within the referred textbook not only facilitates, but also enhances the teaching/learning process as it allows the student to visualize the context and understand the functions of the target foreign language.
