This final course assignement aimed to verify, from a company’s raw material cost reduction initiative, the material change of a Diesel injection system component from the AISI A6 to AISI 52100 under the topics of dimensional stability, wear and capability of its production process, aiming at the integrated analysis of product design and its manufacturing process. To evaluate the dimensional stability, a thermal cycle test was carried out in both materials, regarding the decomposition of retained austenite and comparing results of the functional characteristics of the component before and after the cycle. For the evaluation of wear, a test of reciprocating sliding wear of both materials was done in tribometer, in which the wasted volumes after the test were analyzed, as well as the coefficients of friction obtained. Finally, for the evaluation of process capability, the study was proposed with measurement of the same characteristics of the dimensional stability test, but in a larger sample. However, this test could not be performed due to lack of samples. With these three tests performed, in these aspects, the change of raw material was verified, and there was no difference between the materials considering dimensional stability, but the tribological behavior was slightly higher in AISI A6 compared to AISI 52100 in terms of worn volume. With this, the results obtained based the decisions following this work regarding the continuity of the project of the alteration of the raw material of the studied component.
