dc.description.abstractThis work consists of a bibliographical research on Sociolinguistics and the work with linguistic variation at school. To meet this proposal, the research presents an overview of the theoretical assumptions of Sociolinguistics, bringing the path from the research carried out in the area to discussions on social valuation and the judgment of variants, and how this can reflect on the formation of the student and in school practice. The results point to the importance of a teaching manner that raises awareness of linguistic diversity, anchored in the theoretical perspectives of the Pedagogy of Linguistic Variation (FARACO; ZILLES, 2015 (org.), Culturally Sensitive Pedagogy and Bidialectal Education (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2004; BORTONI-RICARDO; DE SOUSA, 2008), making Portuguese Language classes the appropriate place for students to expand their knowledge of the language and its diversity, deconstructing the common sense view that classes in this discipline focus only on grammar, or, in the teaching of a single language variety, the cultured or standard norm.
