Cosmetics account for 20% of the world market in beauty products class. In Brazil the use of such cosmetics is common among varied age groups, being thus a product of easy access. ANVISA is responsible for the inspection of these products regarding the margin of safety in the application to which they are destined. Cosmetics consist of natural or synthetic substances, however, such substances can’t pose a risk to the health of the consumer. Many cosmetics have dyes and pigments in their composition, which can be designated as potentially toxic, located on the periodic table between copper and lead. In the process of manufacturing eye shadow, in order to obtain a coloring, inorganic dyes and pigments such as iron oxide, titanium dioxide, copper and chromium oxide are applied on a talc base. The objective of the present study is the multielementar analysis of shadows for the eye region commercialized in Brazil by the techniques of X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Region Spectroscopy (FTIR), Dispersive Energy Spectroscopy (EDS) and morphology by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and colorimetry (CIELAB), the presence of Iron Oxide was observed for all samples, and other minerals and dyes were distinct for the samples depending on the lot and line. All the compounds found are within the norms of ANVISA and do not present minerals classified as toxic.
