The use of agricultural residues for the production of carbonaceous adsorbents can be presented as a solution to two problems, namely the high cost of treatment of industrial effluents and the great waste of food. This study was done in order to study whether these adsorbents are really efficient at removing contaminants. The adsorbents were produced from potato and cassava in a muffle furnace and microwave and chemically activated with phosphoric acid. The characterization showed that yields of adsorbents are similar, the pH is low, for those who had cassava as a precursor and moisture and, consequently, the drying time are smaller than the values presented by the coal trade. Moreover, the values of methylene blue varied between 17.6 ± 2.50 mg / cg and 78.9 ± 6.85 mg/cg, and the values of iodine number of 223.1 ± 15.37 and 508 , a 14.14 ± mg/ g. The analysis of scanning electron microscopy indicated a higher pore structure in coals produced in a muffle furnace. The application has obtained favorable results for removal of phenol and pyridine, and the maximum percentage removal of these compounds of 92.6% and 75.69% respectively. The Freundlich isotherm model is best suited to the CAs tested in the isotherm of phenol, and also to those tested in the isotherm of pyridine. The results indicate that it is possible the use of carbonaceous adsorbents made from starchy biomass in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing phenol and pyridine.
