This article analyzes how the theme death, culturally considered as a taboo, is portrayed in children’s literature, in order to build the conceptual support necessary for the creation of a children’s book essay, addressing this theme. The Visual Poetics methodology is applied to allow the work process to be central. It is, still, a conceptual work that lay it´s foundation in theoretical research. Therefore, the educational function of literature for infant development, the theme of death in literature and its subjective aspects are discussed, as well as the analysis of two similar books and their symbolic aspects. This work presents a literary essay entitled The Time of Leaving, in addition to the report of its creation process, taking into account the methodology of visual poetics.
