Pasture management is a key-factor of integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), being necessary to understand plant and animal growth. The nitrogen fertilizer is another important factor to ICLS, because the availability of this nutrient controls the processes of flow and chemical composition of tissues. Within this brief context, experiments conducted to assess aspects related to soil-plant-animal interface, has been demonstrated the benefits of ICLS. However, there are no records of how the treatments applied, pasture management heights (high and low) and times of N application (pasture and cultivation of grains), can influence the capacity of establishment of pastures. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate forage production of temperate (C3) grasses during the establishment phase (i.e. between sowing and the first grazing). Forage species evaluated were black oats (Avena strigosa L.) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The experiment was conducted in a 14 ha area, where is being conducted a long-term experiment with non-tillage ICLS in Abelardo Luz/SC. The experiment design was randomized blocks, with three replications, and treatments arranged in a factorial scheme (2x2). The following variables were analyzed: forage mass, canopy structure (morphological composition, bulk density, extended tiller, stem and free-lamina length, canopy height, tiller population density, lodging index, and nutritive value. It was concluded that the historical of nitrogen fertilization and pasture height do not affect the initial productivity and establishment of temperate (C3) grasses in non-tillage ICLS.
