This work presents a comparative study between the fault location algorithms based on fundamental frequency components proposed by Jamali (1990) and Girgis (1992), in order to identify which one is the most accurate and robust. The simulations were made based on a line transmission of 200 km in length, 440 kV, modeled with the software ATP (Alternative Transients Program). The analysis evaluated the performance of each algorithm while the values of fault distance, fault type, error percentage in the distributed parameters of the transmission line and the fault resistence were being variated. Seeking to prove the results consistency, the tests were made in two stages, the first one with faults at 10 km from de first terminal, and the second with faults at 150 km. It was verified, from the results, that the algorithm proposed by Jamali (1990) presents a greater accuracy and robustness to all fault configurations, except for those where the distributed parameters of the line are too inaccurate. In this case the algorithm proposed by Girgis (1992) presents better performance for both accuracy and robustness.
