The reduction of leaf area caused by pests is one of the factors of the productivity decrease in common bean. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of continuous defoliation on vegetative and reproductive stages of the bean crop, evaluating different agronomic traits and to identify how the effect of defoliation caused by pests can affect crop development and grain yield. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block experimental design with non - defoliation, 25% and 50% defoliation, which were performed with scissors. This procedure was adopted in the V3 phenological stages, when the plants presented their first open and flat trifoliolate leaf; R5, prefloating period with first floral cluster at the lower nodes and R8, which comprises the period of grain filling. The number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, number of grains per plant and mass of grains per plant were evaluated. The agronomic characteristics as a function of the leaves were submitted to analysis of variance and regression. The numbers of pods per plant, grains per plant and grain mass per plant reduced with defoliation in relation to the plants without reducing the leaf area. On the other hand, the number of grains per pod was similar to non-defoliated plants. In relation to the different phenological stages of the crop, there was no significant difference, a factor that may have undergone direct climate action during cultivation.
