This work aims to develop and validate a microbiological counting method in oral hygiene products, in addition to proving the efficiency of the chemical neutralization process of preservatives present in these products, in order to reduce the cost of company "X" with outsourced microbiological tests and reduce the time of issuing reports for the release of finished products. For this purpose, samples of three products (A, B and C) containing different preservatives (sodium benzoate, methyl paraben and chlorhexidine digluconate) were diluted in neutralizing solution and inoculated with predetermined amounts of fungi (C. albicans and A. brasiliensis). and bacteria (S. aureus, E. coli and P. aeruginosa), being incubated afterwards. Control samples were also prepared in order to determine the toxicity of the neutralizing solution and the amount of Colony Forming Units (CFU) per milliliter of each microbial suspension used. After the incubation period, the CFU numbers of the samples were determined, being within the parameters of microbiological control established by The United States Pharmacopoeia and by the quality control of the company where the tests were performed. There was a linear relation between the inoculated and recovered amounts. Thus, it was also possible to confirm the absence of toxicity in the neutralizing solution and its efficiency in canceling the antimicrobial effects of the preservatives present in the samples. In view of the above, it is concluded that the microbiological counting method developed is capable of producing reliable results, making the process of releasing products for dispatch more agile, reducing the expenses of company "X".
