dc.description.abstractFollower cam mechanism is often used in various types of machines and equipment and its design starts with an initial motion requisition. From this requirement the position, velocity and acceleration diagrams are constructed. Subsequently the components are dimensioned. During the design of a follower cam mechanism, several design variables and constraints must be analyzed. This is done in order to guarantee the initial design condition and the proper functioning of the mechanism. To facilitate the resolution, optimization methods cam be used. This work uses the optimal design applied a follower cam mechanism, thereby reducing Project time and avoiding oversized dimension. It should be recognized that the cam is associated with a flat face follower. The objective function is based on the cam size and the contact stress between the follower face and the cam. As design variables there are the cam base radius and the follower face width. To solve the problem we use the genetic algorithm which is a stochastic search method and a nonlinear constrained optimization method. The results showed that the weighting coefficients are very important and should be chosen appropriately for each application.
