dc.descriptionEntre los años 2011 y 2012, el Departamento Forestal de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) llevó a cabo una evaluación en los países que conforman la cuenca Amazónica para analizar el estado de conocimiento y de la práctica actual de la silvicultura de bosques naturales tropicales en esta región. Este estudio fue adelantado mediante una extensa revisión de literatura, consultas a expertos e instituciones forestales de cada país. Aquí se presentan algunos resultados de este trabajo con énfasis en Venezuela. Se ofrece un análisis retrospectivo de las principales prácticas silviculturales aplicadas a los bosques naturales, en donde el Programa de Investigación con fines de manejo llevado a cabo en la Reserva Forestal Caparo ocupa un lugar preponderante. Se resalta que ha existido una tendencia hacia una mayor promoción del manejo silvicultural con énfasis en la regeneración asistida (plantaciones en líneas), si se compara con opciones de manejo de la composición natural del bosque (manejo de masa remanente). Varias barreras de índole institucional, político y de carácter técnico han limitado la capacidad de la silvicultura para influenciar positivamente el manejo forestal sostenible de los bosques venezolanos. Luego del análisis surge un conjunto de lecciones aprendidas que incluye el fortalecimiento de la investigación para el desarrollo de opciones silviculturales para el uso múltiple del bosque y la mitigación y adaptación al cambio climático. Asimismo, se hacen recomendaciones de política que permitan orientar el desarrollo de la práctica silvicultural hacia el futuro.
dc.descriptionBetween 2011 and 2012, the Forestry Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) carried out a review study entitled “The silviculture in the Amazon rainforest: current status and recommendations for policy and the practice” to gather updated information about the “state of the art” regarding the silviculture of natural forests in this region. Here, we present some results of the study carried out in Venezuela based in literature review, expert opinion and contacts with the forestry department and other stakeholders in the country. A retrospective analysis of the main silviculture practices applied in natural forests is offered in which the Research Program of Tropical Forest Management initiated in the Caparo Forest Reserve is perhaps the most important initiative. A notorious trend is detected in terms of the silviculture applied in Venezuela, where a stronger prominence on assisted natural regeneration (enrichment planting) was observed when compared with the management of the natural regeneration (remnant stand management). Several factors, including institutional and policy limitations and technical approaches have hampered a more positive influence of silviculture for sustainable forest management. A broad range of lessons learned is presented including the strengthening of research on silvicultural options for multiple use of forests and alternatives for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Finally, several policy recommendations are proposed to facilitate and shape the development of the silvicultural practice in the future.
