| dc.description | Malnutrition and the food crisis are facts that affect the majority of people living in Venezuela; this situation has been mentioned in this magazine on several occasions through research articles, as a public health problem. On the other hand, the Caritas Organization of Venezuela, estimates that in our country 280,000 children could die from malnutrition. In this sense, the studies reveal that during the year 2017, between five and six children died weekly due to lack of food, and that at least 33% of the child population had a delay in their growth1. In addition, malnutrition increases the risk of infections, viruses and bacteria, which leads to the appearance of various diseases typical of poorly nourished people; Among them are infections that in some cases, especially children, require prolonged hospital stays that affect their psychomotor development. One is Kwashiorkor, common in babies and children suffering from a strong protein deficiency; Its consequences are diarrhea, edema, liver damage and lack of growth. | dc.description | La desnutrición y la crisis alimentaria son hechos que afectan a la mayoría de personas que viven en Venezuela; dicha situación ha sido mencionada en esta revista en varias oportunidades a través de artículos de investigación, como un problema de salud pública. Por otra parte, la Organización Cáritas de Venezuela, estima que en nuestro país 280.000 niños podrían morir a causa de la desnutrición. En este sentido, los estudios revelan que durante el año 2017 fallecieron entre cinco y seis niños semanalmente por falta de alimentación, y que al menos 33% de la población infantil presentaba retardo en su crecimiento1. Además, la desnutrición aumenta el riesgo de contraer infecciones, virus y bacterias, lo que conlleva a la aparición de diversas enfermedades típicas de personas deficientemente nutridas; entre ellas se encuentran las infecciones que en algunos casos, especialmente los niños amerita estancias hospitalarias prolongadas que afectan su desarrollo psicomotor. Una es el Kwashiorkor, frecuente en bebes y niños que sufren una fuerte deficiencia de proteínas; sus consecuencias son diarrea, edema, daños en el hígado y falta de crecimiento.
