dc.descriptionThe article discusses the development of the favela into a tourist attraction. Rocinha is the paradigmatic “tourist favela”, with tours taking place regularly since the early 1990s and with 3 thousand tourists visiting the favela each month. The development of the favela into a tourist destination is seen as part of the so-called reality tours phenomenon and of the global circulation of the favela as a trademark. The methodology included different strategies: long interviews with qualified informants, field observation, and participant observation in different tours. The article concludes with some thoughts on tourism activities on impoverished areas.en-US
dc.descriptionDiscute-se o processo de elaboração da favela como atração turística inserindo-o em um duplo contexto: no campo dos chamados tours de realidade e no fenômeno de circulação global da favela como trademark. Apresenta-se como referente empírico a Rocinha, caso paradigmático de “favela turística”, com passeios ocorrendo regularmente desde inícios da década de 1990 e com um volume de cerca de três mil turistas por mês. A metodologia envolve diferentes estratégias de pesquisa: entrevistas em profundidade com informantes qualificados, observações de campo e observação participante nos tours. O artigo encerra com algumas ponderações sobre a prática do turismo em áreas de pobreza.pt-BR
