| dc.description | The articles examines the celebrations in Brazil in 1892, especially in Rio de Janeiro, of the fourth century of the Discovery of America. It discusses the controversies of the IHGB (Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute), the religious festivals and the position of the Roman Catholic Church, which regarded the discovery as "the greatest and finest achievement ever witnessed by the human race". It relates the celebrations to the context of the present Brazilian political crisis and commemorations abroad, such as the Colombus Universil Exhibition in Chicago .
