| dc.description | The article examines the role of the Imperial Public Archives in Brazil at the time of the construction of Brazilian nationality, in XIXth century. The author tries to understand the unexpressive presence of this institution, which gave place to the National Archives, in the administrative structure of the State during all its existence. Having in mind the European national archives created in the same period and the characteristics of the new Brazilian state, the author describes the difficulties Public Archives had to face to play a role proper of this kind of institution because of the policy of secret inherited from Portugal. | en-US |
