dc.descriptionAmong the most common manifestations of Dominican popular religiosity, we can list the Afro-Dominican brotherhoods, the vigils of saints, the so-called Dominican voodoo, the pilgrimage brotherhoods and the messianic cults that arise and reappear in certain historical moments (Davis 1987, 185-193). This article refers to a peculiar Afro-Dominican brotherhood: that of the Holy Spirit of Villa Mella, also known as the Brotherhood of the Congos of Villa Mella. We intend to briefly describe its nature and functions, the ritual ceremonies in which its members or brothers participate.en-US
dc.descriptionEntre las manifestaciones más comunes de la religiosidad popular dominicana, podemos enumerar las cofradías afrodominicanas, las velaciones de santos, el denominado vodú dominicano, las hermandades de peregrinación y los cultos mesiánicos que surgen y resurgen en determinados momentos históricos (Davis 1987, 185-193). Este artículo se refiere a una peculiar cofradía afrodominicana: la del Espíritu Santo de Villa Mella, conocida también como la Cofradía de los Congos de Villa Mella. Nos proponemos describir brevemente su naturaleza y funciones, las ceremonias rituales en que participan sus miembros o cofrades.es-ES
