dc.description.abstract | INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease represents a major health problem worldwide, being considered a progressive chronic disease, characterized by limitation of airflow affecting small airways leading to the destruction of the lung parenchyma, patients are often predisposed to exacerbations both by bacterial aetiology, viral or their comorbidities, causing an acute hypercapnic respiratory failure that according to studies the therapeutic first choice is non-invasive mechanical ventilation. OBJECTIVE: To identify the benefits of non-invasive mechanical ventilation in acute hypercapnic respiratory failure in patients with severe exacerbated COPD, with the aim of quickly, adequately and optimally establishing this therapy, thus decreasing mortality rates, hospital stay and socioeconomic expenses, by reviewing updated scientific evidence. METHODS: Analysis of information extracted from a systematic review of research articles from medical evidence-based sites such as these: SETAR, Cochrane, Medscape, Pubmed, Arch bronconeumol, textbooks, national and international guidelines for the management of non-invasive mechanical ventilation in RAH in patients with acute COPD. CONCLUSIONS: Non-invasive mechanical ventilation is the therapeutic of first choice in cases of ARTI in patients with acute COPD, but it should be borne in mind that to make it work we must choose the patients suitable for this therapy on a clinical basis and do so quickly to avoid failures and mortality rates. | |
