Retaining walls are structures used to support earth masses. These prevent landslides and damage to nearby structures. Good design involves knowledge of forces caused by soil pressure and stresses generated by dynamic loads. Considering that Ecuador is a country with high seismic risk. This project focuses on the comparison of methods to simplify and model these movements more realistically. The main objective is to compare forces and deformations in retaining walls type cantilevered beam by using Mononobe – Okabe (M-O) method, which presents the acceleration vectors as the dynamic part and the execution of a dynamic analysis time-history (T-H) with a seismographic record of the earthquake Pedernales – Ecuador 2016 obtained from the AMNT station. This project develops in 4 main stages: 1) Determination of the vectors of horizontal and vertical acceleration from a seismographic record. 2) Execute a pseudo-static method. 3) Propose a system of a single degree of freedom for a dynamic analysis T-H. 4) Compare stresses and deformations between the two methods mentioned above. The main results show that the force obtained by M-O is 1.9 times greater than that obtained by the T-H analysis. Also, the Pedernales earthquake produced a force 2.7 times greater than the static pressure with T-H analysis and 5.1 times greater with M-O method. Finally this type of structures should have a great ductility so they can dissipate the most energy.
