Objective: Determine the prevalence and risk factors of postpartum depression in mothers treated at the Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga, in the city of Cuenca in 2014. Materials and Methods: We conducted a prevalence, analytical cross study. The population was 248 mothers whom labor was attended at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital. We used a non probabilistic, consecutive sample. Data collection: questionnaire with the “Edinburgh postpartum depression scale” and questions for risk factors. For data tabulation we used the SPSS 15.00 evaluation version software. Analysis: we used the frequency, percentage, prevalence ratio, chi square test and the p value. Results: We obtained a prevalence of 34.3% of postpartum depression based on the EPDS. The associated factors statistically significant we found were: Ideal reproductive age: PR: 2,53 p Value: 0,022, lack of familiar support during pregnancy: PR: 7,25 p Value: 0,0008 and domestic violence: PR: 3,75 p Value: 0,0003 Conclusions: The mothers with higher risk of developing postpartum depression were those who didn’t belong to the ideal reproductive age, had familiar support lack during pregnancy and suffered domestic violence.
