dc.description.abstractBACKGROUND: Situational leadership refers to a leadership theory which states that face a certain situation the leader adopts one or two options of the following styles of situational leadership; Direct (E1), Guide (E2), Participate (E3) and Delegate (E4), it depends on features like the situation and maturity. OBJECTIVE: To identify situational leadership styles that the nurses of health institutions adopt in the canton Cuenca. METHODOLOGY: We use descriptive method, applied to 98 licensed nurses staff in health facilities, mobile unit, health clinics and Rehabilitation Center Social - Turi all of them belong to the Districts 01D01 and 01D02 health, Cuenca 2016. Data were collected through the professor Herman Bachenheimer’s instrument about situational leadership, the information was processed in SPSS v24 program. RESULTS: The 98 nurses ; 62 (63.3%) take the leadership style “Leading”, 14 adopt leadership style “Participate” (14.3%), 9 adopt leadership style “Lead” (9.2%), 1 adopts Delegating leadership style (1%). On the other hand, From the 98 nurses 12 people adopt two styles of situational leadership at the same time; having thus: 5 adopt the Direct-Guide (5.1%), 4 Leading-Join (4.1%), 2 Direct- Participate (2%) styles, and one Guide- Delegate (1%). CONCLUSION: according to the Situational Leadership Theory this study has identified that nurses mostly adopt leadership style Leading, which means they lead to all group members in order to achieve the objectives and perform the tasks satisfactorily , convincing each member that their activity is important
