dc.description.abstractObjective. Determine the most prevalent injuries caused by traffic accidents in patients treated in 2010 in the two largest hospitals in the Cuenca city Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital and Jose Carrasco Arteaga characterize the social determinants related to their occurrence.- Material and methods. With a cross-sectional design of the clinical files for 2010 belong to people injured and treated at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital and Jose Carrasco Arteaga of Cuenca city. We determined the characteristics of the accidents, type of injury and organ involvement and social determinants analyzed from the perspective of human factors, vehicle factors and physical environment.- Results. There were 658 traffic accidents. 62.2% attended at the Vicente Corral Moscoso (MSP) and 37.8% in the José Carrasco Arteaga (IESS) Hospitals. The percentage of males was higher than in women (62.9%). The most affected age was 18 to 40 years and the average age of the population was 35.9 ± 16.01 years from a low of 18 and a maximum of 92 years. The singles were 40.7% and 43.2% married. 70.6% of those affected live in urban areas. The primary instruction was predominant (45.3%) and secondary (37.8%). Students and employees were the same percentage, 47.6% of the sample. The possession of property belonging mostly to mid-(82.4%) as the economic returns were average at 76.6% of cases. The most frequent accidents were crash (59.3%) and winding (22.6%). 60.5% of accidents occurred on the street. The most common injuries were fractures (30%) and TEC (28.5%) and the most affected organs, consequently, the head (CNS) and the extremities. The error in driving was the main human factor (90.7%), the vehicle in poor condition (85.4%) and the atmosphere of insecurity (86.5%) were the main determinants of traffic accidents.- Discussion. The realization of few studies that include traffic accidents as a health problem does not have more background information. Compilations like
