The objective of this research was to evaluate the diuretic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of the root of Piper peltatum L., in laboratory albino rats (Rattus norvegicus). To evaluate the diuretic activity, 25 females with weights between 160-240 g were used, to which the following treatments were administered orally: hydroalcoholic extract (25, 100 and 200 mg / kg), positive control (furosemide 10 mg / kg) and vehicle (carboxymethylcellulose 0.9% w/v). Subsequently, at an interval of 6 hours from the administration of the treatments, the volumes of excreted total urine and electrolytes were recorded. On the other hand, in the vegetal material the presence of fatty compounds, lactones, coumarins, triterpenes, steroids, alkaloids, catechins, reducing sugars, phenols, tannins, saponins and flavonoids was verified, by means of the photochemical screening. The content of phenolic compounds in the hydroalcoholic extract determined through the Folin Ciocalteu method was 274.86 ± 3.27 mg equivalents of gallic acid/g of dry extract, while the flavonoid content obtained by the chelation method with AlCl3 was 86.62 ± 3.67 mg equivalents of quercetin/g of dry extract. The antioxidant activity presented by the plant at a concentration of 1000 ppm was 36.95%. The diuretic effect of the root extract of Piper peltatum L. was checked at three doses (25 mg / kg, 100 mg / kg, 200 mg / kg), observing that there were no statistically significant differences with respect to the reference drug (furosemide).
