The following research has developed a formulation of a sunscreen based on corn extract (Zea mays L.) its effectiveness and safety in vitro also its quality were determined. The quality controlof the vegetable drug was carried out, with the determination of humidity, total ashes, soluble in water and insoluble in hydrochloric acid. The photochemical screening allowed the qualitative detection of organic components of phenolic nature in the leaves of Zea mays. The quality control of the ethanolic extract of Zea mays leaves was determined through organoleptic, physicochemical parameters, flavonoid content and total phenols, the in vitro sun protection factor was evaluated through applying Mansur equation, and its safety wasalso evaluated through the HETCAM eye irritation test. The results obtained in all the tests demonstrated the potential of the ethanolic extract of Zea mays leaves in order to be included in photoprotective formulations. The photoprotective cream showed better characteristics in terms of “FPS”, it formulated a base ofcorn leaf ethanolic extract and enhanced with olive oil, obtaining a very high level of protection according to the “OMS (FPS 30)”. The safety of the sunscreen was evaluated through the usage of chorioallantoid-staining membrane test with trypan blue “HET-CAM TBS”, where its toxicity was quantitatively determined by cataloging it according to “COLIPA” as non-irritant. In this way, it was obtained the formulation of a sunscreen based on corn extract that meets basic parameters, in order to carry out further studies based on “FPS” in vivo and stability of the product.
