This study proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of three types of substrates for the vegetative development of ash (Fraxinus americana. L) at the ESPOCH nursery, Chimborazo province, Riobamba city, in order to improve the sexual reproduction of this important forest specie. This research was carried out in the forest nursery of the Faculty of Natural Resources, where a randomized complete block design (DBCA) was established, consisting of 3 treatments, 3 replications and a total of 108 experimental units, in which 3 substrates were used: T1 (Sand 50% + Peat 50%), T2 (Peat 25% + coconut fiber 50% + Sand 25%), T3 (Sand 100% (Control)). The variables evaluated for both germination and vegetative development were: height (cm), diameter at collar height (mm), number of leaflets and number of germinated plants (%). The analysis of variance and separation of means for parametric data used Tukey's test, for non-parametric data the Friedman test was used, at a significance level of 5%, in the InfoStat software. The gotten results in this research showed that the substrates with the best performance for the percentage of germination and vegetative development were Peat 25% coconut fiber 50% Sand 25% (T2) and Sand 50% Peat 50% (T1), showing highly significant values in the A range, compared to the control 100% (T3) Sand, belonging to the B range. It was concluded that the substrate; Peat 25% coconut fiber 50% sand 25% (T2) during the whole process of evolution showed a higher average than the other treatments, therefore it is recommended to use this substrate for the propagation and growth of Fraxinus americana. L.
