The purpose of this work is the analysis and design of two structures with 4 stories, located in the city of Quito, using special moment frames (SMF) and composite special moment frames (C-SMF), through specific design processes for each structural system established in the national standard NEC 2015, and in international standards such as AISC 341-16, AISC 358-16 and AISC 360-16, with the help of a computer program that allows us to idealize the structure based on the characteristics presented in the present project. This will allow us to analyze and interpret the results of the structural behavior of both special moment frame systems in the case of possible seismic events, thus achieving good structural performance of steel structural systems. From the structural analysis performed in both special moment frames systems, similar responses were obtained according to the seismic resistance parameters that must be taken into consideration in accordance with national regulations, and in terms of the amount of materials to be used specifically related to the structural steel in the special moment frames, a significant saving was achieved in the composite special moment frame system (C-SMF) and this is due to the fact that it is made up of concrete filled columns, which provide greater rigidity to the structural system, optimizing the total amount of structural steel.
