This article proposes the automatic coordination of distance protection in a transmission system after an extreme contingency. The goal of an automatic coordination is to restore the sensitivity, selectivity and reliability of the distance protections. First a coordination of distance protections is made in a transmission system in initial conditions. Then two different scenarios are proposed, in the two scenarios there is an extreme contingency, the extreme contingency causes the unavailability of several elements of the system, due to the unavailability of elements of the system, the short-circuit currents change in the system and the transmission system adopts a new topology, therefore the adjustment of the distance protections is automatically recalculated. As a result of the automatic coordination, the distance protections are ready to act if there is a fault in the transmission system The algorithms were developed in MATLAB and PowerFactory softwares, and they are applied to an electric power system of 39 nodes proposed by the IEEE.
