Testing of the 1985 Central Arnerican Bean Yield and Adaptation Nursery (VICAR) under the “Tapado” system. Twenty eight red and black bean cultivars from the 1985 Central American Bean Yield and Adaptation Nursery were tested under the “Tapado” system at the Buenos Aires County, Puntarenas - Costa Rica. The most widely planted bean cultivar in this zone was used as the control. A Complete Randomized Block Design, with three replications was used. The crop was managed under a simulated “Tapado” system. The improved cultivars did not outyield the local control. The latter outyielded the black bean cultivars cv. Huasteco, ICTA 81-64 and BAT 450. A lineal relationship was determined among the number of plants at harvest time and the grain production of red and black beans. There was a 46.5 to 66.5% plant loss at harvest time with regard to the number of seeds planted.
