Aby Warburg y el pathos superviviente: De la psicología a la memoria social

Abstract

El presente estudio teórico se propone restituir un aspecto del método Warburg. Analizaremos la influencia de autores como Robert Vischer y Jacob Burckhardt en la propuesta warburguiana de una “psicología” para el abordaje de los fenómenos culturales. Descubriremos más tarde que Warburg se desplazó desde este enfoque hacia la preocupación por el modo en que las “fuerzas impersonales” producen sentidos histórico-culturales. Proponemos aquí que este desplazamiento, por un lado, estuvo mediado por la configuración de una mirada crítica —por parte de Warburg— hacia el esteticismo y el historicismo (explicitada en 1900 a través de un célebre intercambio epistolar con André Jolles); por el otro, permite iluminar mejor la noción de pathos superviviente, así como el interés warburguiano por desarrollar una teoría de la memoria social (influenciada por Richard Semon)

The present work aims to restore the problem of the Warburg’s method. First, we will analyse the influence of Jacob Burckhardt and Robert Vischer in the Warburguian proposal of a psychology for the approach of cultural phenomena. Then, we will discover that Warburg moves from this approach towards a new concern for the way in which impersonal forces produce historical-cultural senses. As we propose here, on the one hand, this movement is mediated by the configuration of a critique towards aestheticism and historicism (made explicit in 1900 through a famous epistolary exchange with André Jolles); on the other hand, it allows a better understanding of the notion of surviving pathos as well as the Warburguian interest for developing a theory of social memory, influenced by Richard Semon.
