dc.description.abstract | The conflict developed in Cuba between 1895 and 1898 brought about major informative challenges to newspapers in Buenos Aires. Indeed, readers with diverse political inclinations objected to the type of coverage offered by the most modern of them, La Nación. Taking its cue from these critical reactions, this article looks at the definition of journalistic modernity prevailing in this important daily. It argues that, contrary to those New York-based newspapers that cultivated the figure of the heroic correspondent, the notion of informative avant-garde was displaced toward the construction of an effect of news omniscience and a prismatic repertoire of opinions.
