This study is part of the work done in the context of a larger research project titled "Criteria for assessing foreign language writing skills (English) at undergraduate level", which aims at exploring English Language II teachers' practices, attitudes and beliefs during instances of summative assessment. In this paper we will compare and contrast the data gathered through teacher reports on students' essays and teachers' comments on the these essays. The findings may help us reflect upon our own decisions as teachers and may pave the way towards reaching a consensus on the assessment criteria.
