Resumen
Structural masonry buildings have become getting more common in Brazil,
especially in buildings, of increasing heights, participating in government funding
programs. Considering this context, the objective of this work is to verify whether the
verification parameters for Physical Nonlinearity Stability (NLF) of ABNT NBR 16868-
1:2020 are reasonable for the calculation of bracing structures in structural masonry
buildings. To achieve this goal, an experimental research will be conducted using case
studies as a basis for numerical modeling. The analysis was performed using the
SAP200 software and considering three methods, namely: the Balanced Wall Method
(BWM), the Tridimensional Frame Method (TMP), and the Finite Element Method
(FEM). These methods was used to build models based on one typical floor plans
considered to have 15 floors. For each of the models a pure analysis (P) will be
performed, without considering the Physical Nonlinearity, and one considering the
simplified parameters (NLF-S) indicated by the Brazilian standard. In addition, for the
FEM case, a third analysis considering the physical nonlinearity in an approximate way
(NLF-A) was performed. It was concluded that when simplified models are used, the
consideration of Physical Nonlinearity through the reduction coefficients presented in
ABNT NBR 16868-1:2020 is coherent. However, when more complete and complex
models are used, such as the Finite Element Method, the simplified consideration may
be unfavorable to the safety of the structure.
