Graphic design is a field of knowledge that started to consolidate around the
same time in the creation of the Gutenberg mobile press, due to the need to organize
visual information in a limited space and produced in series. Digital design, however,
appeared with the creation of personal computers; the need to apply the study of
design in this environment arose at a time when digital information needed some form
of visual organization for effective communication.
Both areas of study are seen as separate, but this is only at the interface level
of both - digital design, being the most recent, needed theories that allowed effective
communication, and at this, graphic design had already consolidated - so the theories
related to digital design began using those of graphic design as initial support.
The present study intends to observe the two areas and show that both can
be adapted to one another - the language of one has the ability to respond on another
platform. For this, a tarot deck containing the twenty-two major arcana of the Marseilles
tarot was created using the language of pixel art.
The Tarot is a deck of cards originally composed of 78 cards, classified
between major and minor arcana. The figures printed on their surfaces have symbols
that represents archetypes with particular meanings that are studied by the tarologists
in process for "reading" the cards. Pixel art is a visual / digital language that emerged
early in the creation of games, due to the technical restriction of the technology of the
time. It is currently regarded as a nostalgic visual style, and even with more powerful
handsets, the style is replicated in new games.
The methodology used for the development of the project is that of Frascara
(2004), because it can adapt to any system that deals with information configuration.
