dc.description | Lippia alba belonging to the family Verbenaceae, has great phenotypic and physiological plasticity and therefore has variation in the constituents of the essential oil (OE) being classified in chemotypes. Plant essential oils are natural insecticides at low doses and their toxicity occurs through multiple mechanisms of action. This thesis aimed to extract and characterize the essential oil of L. alba leaves collected in the Caatinga, and to evaluate its insecticidal and repellent effect against Nasutitermes corniger and Sitophillus zeamais. O (OE) was extracted by hydrodistillation and characterized by GC-MS. The termiticidal bioassay used 20 insects and Avivel containing (OE), eucalyptol, alpha-pinene, or eucalyptol / alpha-pinene. For S.zeamais toxicity and fumigant action were evaluated by ingestion. A yield of 1.6% was identified, eucalyptol, muurolene gamma, β-ocimene, cubenol, β-pinene and α-pinene. The LC50 values of the essential oil, eucalyptol and alpha-pinene determined for workers were 3.65, 2.74 and 2.85 ppm, respectively, while for welders were 1.68, 2.66, 2.162 ppm. The eucalyptol / alpha-pinene solution was LC50 termiticide of 10.48 ppm only against laborers. The samples evaluated were not repellent and the essential oil inhibited the enzymes exoglucanase 26.48%, xylanase 78.3% and total protease 34.81% of workers. The bioassay with S. zeamais revealed that the essential oil, alpha-pinene, eucalyptol / alpha-pinene and eucalyptol blend promoted biomass loss and except eucalyptol, promoted toxicity by LC50 ingestion of 59.4, 4.5 and 4.9, respectively. The fumigation of L. alba, eucalyptol, alpha-pinene, and eucalyptol/alpha-pinene oils induced mortality of S. zemais with LC50 78,16, 0.227, 168.29, 50.56 mg/L of air, revealing the eucalyptol an excellent fumigant agent. The thesis describes for the first time the chemotype VI of the L. alba essential oil in Brazil and that essential oil and the majorities eucalyptol and alpha-pinene are termiticidal agents and the effect on S. zeamais occurs through toxicity/ingestion and fumigation of the oil being the alpha-pinene insecticidal agent and eucalyptol repellent and excellent fumigant agent.
