Este trabalho buscou discutir o papel social da informação na garantia dos Direitos Humanos, a partir do direito à informação. Para realizar esta discussão recorreu-se a uma revisão bibliográfica de caráter exploratório que permitiu construir um panorama histórico da concepção de direitos humanos até a chamada sociedade da informação, e do direito à informação no Brasil e no mundo, além de proporcionar uma análise da relação instrumental que o direito à informação mantém com o direito à saúde, à educação, à moradia adequada e ao meio ambiente.Conclui-se que a garantia do direito à informação é ponto de partida para a garantia de outros direitos humanos e que proporciona o empoderamento necessário à participação política e ao controle social, aspectos fundamentais para a implementação de regimes democráticos sólidos.This study sought to discuss the social role of information in ensuring human rights, from the right of information. To accomplish this discussion we resorted to an literature review with an exploratory character which allowed to build a historical overview of the concept of human rights until the so-called information society, and the right to information in Brazil and in the world, and provided an analysis of the instrumental relationship that the right to information remains with the right to health, to education, to adequate housing and to the environment. We conclude that the guarantee of the right to information is a starting point for the guarantee of other human rights and provides the necessary empowerment to political participation and social control, fundamental aspects for the implementation of sound democratic regimes.
