CAPES The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss and evaluate the objections presented by John Searle in chapter nine of his book Intentionality (1983) against the causal theory of proper names, Our intention is to try to discover the degree of plausibility of these arguments in order to decide whether they are effective or not in their attempt to refute causal theory. Roughly, Searle’s arguments can be divided into three groups: i) observations that demonstrate that causal theory has implicit descriptive elements ii) objections that criticize the necessary aspects of causal theory, i.e., it is intended with these objections to show that some features of causal theory are not necessary for the reference mechanism can be explained satisfactorily; iii) objections that criticize the inadequacy of a causal theory, that is, these objections try to show that some aspects of causal theory are insufficient for the reference mechanism to be satisfactorily explained. With this intention in mind, we will divide this dissertation into three essential parts. The first part (chapter two) will be essentially expositive, where in it we will present a problem of the reference of proper names and the main theories that dispute its solution, namely, Descriptivism and Causal Theory. In the second part (chapter three), we will present and discuss what we believe to be Searle’s main objections to causal theory. The third and final part (chapter four) comprehends the criti- cal comparison of Searlean objections, we will attempt to defend the causal theory of Searle’s reference to objections, for which we need to rely on a modified Causal theory as advocated by Michael Devitt (1974 , 1981, 1987) we will reconstruct, in some moments, passages where Devitt himself responds directly to some Searlean objections. As a result of our investigation we will try to defend a negative position on the question that gives to our dissertation, that is, we believe that John Searle’s objections do not refute the causal theory of reference if we consider its more sophisticated version.
