dc.description | INTRODUCTION: Cognitive decline in the elderly is one of the main indications of possible developments to dementias such as Alzheimer's disease . Studies show the importance of the use and combination of cognitive screening tools applied to the elderly and a reliable informer (caregiver / family) to minimize bias and increase the accuracy of the information. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the cognitive decline in the elderly using the screening from the elderly and his informant. METHOD: This is a descriptive , exploratory , transversal and quantitative approach study that was conducted in the Health District IV , the city of Recife . The sample was stratified random. cognitive screening tools validated in Brazil were the Mini - mental and IQCODE and to test the IQ -CODE reliability of the scales of Zarit and CES- D . Data were analyzed using SPSS , version 21.0 , using the frequency distribution ( relative and absolute ) and mean values and standard deviation . In inferential bivariate analysis, chi- squared tests and Fisher's exact test to analyze the associations in cognitive decline were used. Statistical significance was considered at p ≤ 0.05.RESULTS:Using the Minimental to track cognitive decline prevailed males with 90 or more years, brown , widowers and social class C , with low education ( p = 0.032 ) . The IQ -CODE showed elderly women with 90 or more years , white , widows , class C , D and E and unlearned ( p = 0.003 ) . When applied to the reliability of instruments ( Zarit and CES- D ) to IQCODE the decline was prevalent in men 70-90 years old, white , unmarried and illiterate ( p = 0.002 ) . There was an association of Minimental and IQ -CODE used when the reliability of scales ( p = 0.018 ) .CONCLUSION: Minimental and IQ -CODE are good cognitive screening instruments in the elderly and when used with reliability scales have proven their association between low education and cognitive decline .
