The removal of nitrogen has become an important parameter for projects of new sewage treatment plants. Since this nutrient presents a lot of threats to water quality in recipient bodies and groundwater. The present study was aimed at evaluating the removal of nitrogen from the oxidation ditch in a tropical climate region, located in the central campus of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte / UFRN in the city of Natal / RN. To evaluate the nitrogen removal, laboratory analyzes were performed during the period from August to November, 2018, divided into two phases, following the operational parameters of the ETE / UFRN. Based on physical-chemical parameters; pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Alkalinity, Nitrogen Series and Suspended Solids, so that it was possible to verify the removal of the nitrogen concentrations in the oxidation ditch. In phase I no ammonia removal was observed in the reactor. During Phase II of the research it was possible to identify the average removal of ammonia around 68.56% of the initial concentration, maintaining low average concentrations of nitrate, around 0 to 1 mg/L in the aerobic reactor. It is concluded that DO was the limiting factor for oxidation of nitrogenous matter, but that it is possible to remove nitrogen from the oxidation ditch without affecting the subsequent treatment units.
