| dc.description | The Brazil of the early nineteenth century would show a rich panorama of new shapes, colors and costumes to a growing foreign public, especially after the opening of the Ports in 1808. The figure of the English naturalist William John Burchell stands out among this group, especially for his work, which converges poetic descriptions of the Romantic period and the accuracy of the representation of the natural sciences. The research presented here seeks to understand the role of work in constructing the Burchell's representations of nineteenth century urban landscape, contributing to the debate on the formation of representations of the colonial city. The analysis were based on literature review, focusing on the problematic of iconographic material produced by Burchell as historiographical sources on the subject and analysis of iconography listed through its formal and interpretive readings. The first results indicate dissonance between Burchell's work and the iconographic corpus of other travelers: Burchell realizes the colonial architectural unit. However, improves the look and distinguishes other influences in our architecture (such as indigenous heritage) and moves above the homogenization so recurrent in the historiography of this subject. The camps and villages of Brazil are sometimes presented in intense movement, a counterpoint to the discourses of travelers who visited them, demonstrating that Burchell's perception will be suiting and seizing on Brazil as it continues its journey | |
| dc.description | O Brasil do início do século XIX mostrar-se-ia um rico panorama de novas formas, cores e costumes à um público estrangeiro cada vez maior, principalmente após a Abertura dos Portos em 1808. A figura do naturalista inglês William John Burchell destaca-se dentre esse grupo, sobretudo pela sua obra, onde converge a poética das descrições do período romântico e o rigor da representação das ciências naturais. A pesquisa apresentada busca compreender o papel da obra de Burchell na construção das representações sobre a paisagem urbana oitocentista, contribuindo ao debate sobre a formação das representações sobre a cidade colonial. A análise fundamentou-se na revisão bibliográfica, com enfoque na problematização do material iconográfico produzido por Burchell como fonte historiográfica sobre o assunto e na análise da iconografia elencada por meio de sua leitura formal e interpretativa. Os primeiros resultados apontam dissonâncias entre a obra de Burchell e o corpus iconográfico dos demais viajantes: Burchell apercebe-se da unidade arquitetônica colonial; porém, acura o olhar e distingue outras influências em nossa arquitetura, (como a herança indígena) e avança acima da homogeneização tão recorrente na historiografia do tema. Os arraiais e vilas do Brasil são por vezes apresentados em intenso movimento, um contraponto aos discursos dos viajantes que os percorreram, demonstrando que o olhar de Burchell vai se adequando e apreendendo sobre o Brasil à medida que segue viagem. | |
