Resumen
The school is an institution historically constructed to meet the social demands of where it is
inserted and, therefore, both reproduces and produces its historical-social context. In this way,
the demand of young students on topics related to gender and sexual diversity that I welcome
as a psychologist at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of the State of
Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), within the State, is growing. especially young people from
small municipalities and rural communities. This research aimed to investigate the senses
produced by youngsters from rural communities of IFRN-Campus São Paulo do Potengi
(SPP) on sexual diversity, as well as to analyze how the ruralities mediate the production of
the senses in question, to know how the family and the community interpose in the way rural
youth produces meanings about sexual diversity and to identify how the IFRN-SPP permeates
this production of meanings. We conducted four discussion groups, with 15- to 29-year-old
students, IFRN-SPP students, rural residents, who agreed to participate in the study, with
prior authorization. Considering the students' adhesion and the time of bonding with the
campus, the material produced by a group was analyzed in depth, based on preliminary
categories: sexual diversity, ruralities, family and community, IFRN-SPP, based on
perspectives theories about social constructionism, ruralities and sexual diversity. The results
point to meanings built on sexual diversity that reveal differences in urban and rural life
among young people, emphasizing a predominance of traditional family and community
values in rural areas that restrict the possibilities around sexual diversity, making their
recognition more challenging in this context. On the other hand, the attachment of young
people to the IFRN-SPP has allowed the incorporation of new discursive repertoires, in order
to broaden their senses around sexual diversity, with a view to an exercise of otherness
promoted by the institution.
