Although there is a lot of water on our planet, most of this existing water is not considered to be potable, because it does not meet the legislative parameters. So it is necessary to increase the efficiency of water treatment, in the case of conventional stations, consists of the stages of pre-oxidation, coagulation, flocculation, decantation, filtration and post-oxidation (in our case, chlorination). Chitosan is a pseudo cationic biopolymer, which has excellent properties such as physiological inertia, biodegradability, biocompatibility, toxicity and high adsorption capacity, being an excellent auxiliary of the PAC in the coagulation step. This work proposes to study the use of chitosan as a coagulation aid with PAC 18 for the water captured in the lagoon of Extremoz and treated in ETA, located in the region of the great Natal in Rio Grande do Norte and consequently improve the process in decreasing color and turbidity of water. The removal of the mentioned parameters using PAC + Q (chitosan) demands the use of the Jar-Test with aliquots of the raw water of the lagoon in question, where physical-chemical parameters are studied by varying the concentration of the PAC + Q test mixture. The conditions of the presented work were obtained high efficiency, of 88% with the mixture PAC + Q. In this way, the process becomes promising of application in ETA due to its high efficiency, but the high cost of chitosan in the current market makes this application impossible.
