Resumen
The assessment of nutritional status is the first step in the systematization of care in nutrition,
where, among other parameters, anthropometric data (weight, height, perimeters, skinfolds)
will provide the so-called nutritional indicators, to serve as a reference in the identification of
a or more nutritional problems. In this perspective, the present study sought to assess the
anthropometric nutritional status of lifeguards who are members of the Military Fire
Department of Rio Grande Do Norte, according to body mass index BMI, percentage of body
fat and waist circumference (WC). We sought to describe the socioeconomic, biodemographic
and anthropometric profile of the RN's lifeguard firefighters, as well as to classify the nutritional
status of that group of firefighters. Therefore, a quantitative, descriptive, exploratory and
transversal research methodology was used. The study population of the study corresponded to
members of the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. For a sample of
individuals, military personnel who are part of the Water Rescue Section and work as lifeguards
in RN were selected. The assessment of nutritional status was performed using anthropometric
methods and lifestyle characterization based on a questionnaire. Forty-two male lifeguards with
a mean age of 40.7±7.34 years were evaluated, represented mainly by sergeants (40%) and
corporals (38%). The mean BMI found, 26.22±3.31kg/m², was classified as Pre-Obesity, 40.5%
of respondents were classified as Eutrophy, 50% of the lifeguards were classified as Pre-obesity
and 9.5 % with Obesity 1. The percentage of body fat with a mean of 23.71±4.42 was classified
as moderately high, 24% of those evaluated were classified as adequate, 38% were classified
as moderately high, 31% as high and 7 % with very high fat percentage. However, according
to the average value of the waist circumference, this fat is not concentrated in the abdominal
region, indicating a low risk of developing metabolic diseases. The results allowed us to
conclude that, taking into account the type of activity performed by the participants who need
an adequate nutritional status, as well as a differentiated physical and mental conditioning to be
able to save the lives of others without risking their own, it is important to develop a plan to
monitor the epidemiological profile of this population, as well as the implementation of an
integrated program of physical training aimed at promoting health and work. Additionally, it is
suggested to carry out a program of food and nutrition education for these professionals and,
above all, the development of more robust research that supports more appropriate actions and
interventions.
