Brazil is the world's largest producer of annatto, being responsible for more than 50% of world production, and in the processing of Bixa orellana fruits for the extraction of coloring pigments such as bixin, large quantities of waste are produced without a defined application. In this context, the objective of the study will be the energy characterization of the residue from the processing of the annatto in order to provide subsidies for the energy use in the process of rapid pyrolysis. The analysis was made from samples collected in a plantation located in the city of Bonito / PE. Biomass was characterized by physicochemical characterization by Immediate Analysis (volatile content, moisture, fixed carbon and ash), Elemental Analysis, Compositional Analysis, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Infrared Spectroscopy with Fourier transform and the Calorific Power. Based on the results, it appears that the biomass has a moderate calorific value (15.04 MJ / Kg), low moisture content (9.71%), presenting a high percentage of volatile material (78.50%) and high content of lignin (32.15%) thus showing good potential for the energy use of this type of biomass. The results of pyrolysis indicate a good production of phenols, representing the largest portion found (about 35%), which are interesting for several areas of the industry, such as the phenolic resins, pesticides and paints industries, thus showing good potential for use both in direct burning and in the use of pyrolysis products.
