Resumen
The use of colorants is widespread in industries, for example in the leather, paper, plastic and textile industries. Due to its application in the textile industry, liquid wastes are generated which can contain organic and inorganic compounds, making it difficult to recover and treat their effluents. Disposal of polluted effluents can lead to contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water, and this can have a major impact on the environment and the local population in general. Methylene blue is a heterocyclic aromatic dye, soluble in water and has several applications in the chemical and biological areas. In industry this compound is commonly used in dyeing cotton, wood and silk. This work proposes the study of the possibility and effects of the removal of methylene blue in aqueous solutions by liquid-liquid extraction using reverse micelles of the CTAB surfactant and an organic phase composed of kerosene. The extraction methodology was done by mixing in a funnel separating an aqueous solution containing the methylene blue and kerosene solution containing the CTAB surfactant, followed by stirring and rest to obtain equilibrium. The highest extraction obtained was the removal of 34.62% of the dye in relation to its initial concentration. It was also observed that the organic phase / aqueous phase ratio does not significantly interfere with extraction.
