Estereótipo do profissional bibliotecário: realidade versus ficção

Abstract

Presents a study on the analysis of the librarian profession in fictional works, giving a introduction on the librarian profession, the notions of prejudice and stereotypes that surrounds it and also the librarian’s self-image. Aims to make a brief exposition of the stereotypes surrounding the librarian profession on fictional works and on the popular imagination and to exemplify specifically fictional librarian characters and to elaborate a comparative profile of the graduate and undergraduate librarians between the former and the latter, with those separated by sexual orientation and gender, nominally male and female cisgender. An inquiring and descriptive research was conducted utilizing a bibliographical data collection with a methodological procedure and endorsed by a quantitative and a qualitative analysis of the collected data gathered using a self-administered questionnaire as the mean to gather and collect the data, made available on Facebook groups formed by graduated and undergraduate librarians utilizing the Google Forms questionnaire and being applied through November 2 to November 3 of 2018. Concludes that there are differences between the reality and the fiction of the librarian profession’s stereotypes specially on more recent fiction works, however it also notes that there’s a lacking of diversity and a lacking of better usage of the characters. Recommends a subsequent research to assess in detail the physical traits, personality, behavior and personal tastes of the librarian professional, and suggests a research on the more recent fiction works that portray the librarian professional in a closer to reality role and the social and cultural diversity of them.
