Resumen
In this research, entitled "Euphonium Teaching at Higher Education Level in the Federal
Universities of Brazil", we investigated the characteristics of euphonium teaching, with
references to instrumental practice and the teaching of the instrument. The research sought to
understand the teaching process in these federal institutions that have the college degree in this
instrument, at present. To achieve the general objective and specific objectives, four semistructured interviews were conducted with university professors: Professor Jean Silva of the
Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), tubist and bass trombonist; Professor Iris
Vieira of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), Tubist; Professor Albert Khattar of the
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), tubist; and Professor Fernando Deddos of the
Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), being the only euphoniumist. In order to
know the main methodological characteristics of euphonium teaching and also to analyze the
course plans of these universities, we sought to identify the traditional and non-traditional
teaching materials in use, as well as to verify the types of repertoire contemplated. An
exploratory literature review was also conducted, focusing on performance-related works that
portray instrumental practice and how to play an instrument, as well as works related to Musical
Education, as well as other pedagogical issues related to musical instruments. In this sense, the
theoretical framework sought to present the works that are most related to this research, in order
to identify peculiarities related to both the instructor's teacher and the student and to discuss
about particularities as to the technical skills needed by the euphonist, graduated in these
institutions. In addition to the theoretical framework, with the result of the interviews, it was
possible to know the profile of the teachers interviewed and some aspects that shaped their
teaching activity, elucidating the methodological characteristics of what has been the teaching
of euphonium in the country, especially in the context of higher education. At Brazilian federal
universities. It was possible to realize that there is harmony between the purposes of teachers
and students, which have qualities that allow the facilitation of teaching and are flexible as to
the didactic material, methods and / or repertoire used. Within this flexibility, it was observed
that the didactic materials and repertoires are not common to the four universities, however,
only two were presented by all teachers interviewed. It was possible to realize that there is no
consensus about the repertoire used, that there is no way to define a repertoire taken as standard.
However, they seek to contemplate all periods with transcriptions / adaptations / arrangements,
original works, Brazilian pieces, solos and chamber music. Teachers encourage the practice of
playing by ear; exploration of new possibilities; and score editing. It was noticed that the ETB association has collaborated with the construction of a knowledge bridge, allowing dialogue
between teachers and students. It has been found that what has been done about the euphonium
performance and teaching in Brazil, although relevant, still has much to advance.
