Resumen
This study seeks to reflect about the causes of infant mortality among children under 1 year old in Brazil, as well as the reasons for variations in this index according to the regions surveyed. This theme emerges to present the article “Spatial distribution of infant mortality rate and its relationship with the number of neonatal intensive care beds in the Brazilian territory”. The analysis of the infant mortality rate is a predictor of the socioeconomic development of the population or region, which helps to identify inequalities and trends that need specific actions, in addition to observing the preventable causes of these infant deaths. In conclusion, it is clear the relevance of social determinants, such as better income distribution, improvements in quality and access to maternal and child health services, indeed the need for greater adherence of health professionals to the Health Ministry’s protocols, as well as the focus on maternal health, family planning and sex education to reduce child mortality in the country.
