Maternidade Escola Januário Cicco: história, arquitetura e patrimônio

Abstract

The Maternity Hospital-School Januario Cicco is a genuine representative of Natal architecture in the beginning of the XX century. It was built between 1932 and 1940 and inaugurated in 1950. In 65 years of existence, it still maintains the same kind of use and activity as well as its architectural features, despite the innumerable architectural interventions that occurred in its facilities in order to incorporate all the technological and scientific developments in medicine. This is a rare event, especially when it comes to a hospital building. The purpose of this research is to investigate the peculiarities involved in the process of architectural expansion in this institution that, in spite of being a reference in women’s health support in the state and all the frequently updated technological apparatus, has successfully preserved its typological and stylistic features throughout all these years. I believe that the data obtained in this research may substantiate other works in hospital architecture and built heritage preservation areas.
